Thayet Correctional Facility Frees 13 Political Inmates

3 December, 2025

In Tanintharyi Region, 13 individuals who had been unjustly arrested by the Military Commission troops and imprisoned on political charges at Dawei Prison have been released, according to a person close to the prison.

Among those released were three female political prisoners and ten male political prisoners. They had been serving sentences under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code as well as other charges. They were released on December 1, according to one of the political prisoners.

“They had 505(a) along with other charges. When the 505 charges were removed, it was like the other charges were already covered,” he said.

Among the released were Ko Soe Pyae Aung and Ma Soe Mie Mie Kyaw, who were arrested by the military in 2021 and sentenced to seven years under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code and Section 52(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

“Among those released, “some had been in for two years, some three, some up to four. We can confirm all 13,” he added.

On November 27, five inmates and prisoners serving sentences under Section 505(a) were also released from Dawei Prison, according to sources close to the prison.

Following the 2021 military coup, there are reportedly around 4,000 inmates and prisoners serving sentences on political grounds at Dawei Prison, according to information from the DPPN.
