Taunggyi Police Inspections at Hotels and Vehicle Gates
22 October, 2025
In southern Shan State, Taunggyi Township, police units under the junta command have been conducting inspections across residential wards, hotels, and guesthouses, checking the personal details of guests and drivers since early in the third week of October, according to local sources.
As the Taunggyi Tazaungdaing festival approaches, police in Taunggyi have intensified checks across the town, citing concerns that armed groups or underground networks could carry out attacks. According to sources, the inspections aim to track down military and police deserters as well as fugitives and suspected militants. Officers have been checking guest records at hotels, motels, and guesthouses, while at vehicle gates, they are reportedly inspecting phones for information and videos.
“Township police are inspecting hotels and guesthouses and checking guest registrations. They are also monitoring vehicle license plates at the entrances and exits of Taunggyi, as well as at the bus station. Officers have reportedly been checking the phones of people entering and leaving the city,” said a source.
The current round of inspections in Taunggyi marks the second such operation, following a similar crackdown in August, according to sources. Local residents say the increased police activity has made them feel unsafe, and many are worried about the possibility of further checks, arrests, and extortion.
“In the past, they did not conduct checks during Tazaungdaing. They only asked me to record my registration information and collect it after the event. Now, they have come to inspect twice. I have also been told to report any suspicions immediately,” said a hotelier.
The personal details of passengers in vehicles are to be thoroughly checked and submitted to the relevant township administrators and police stations. Hotels and drivers have also been instructed to cooperate with the inspections.
